BPP are pleased to announce 9 students who have been awarded the first Bridge Scholarships by their Universities

Last year, BPP University Law School launched the Bridge Programme, a free career development course to help aspiring solicitors and barristers prepare for their future careers.

One year on, the team at BPP are pleased to announce 9 students who have been awarded the first Bridge Scholarships by their Universities.   These talented students have each earned a £5,000 scholarship, awarded on social mobility grounds, which will help to fund the next stage of their legal studies.

The Bridge Programme enables students to develop core skills and competences that they will need to demonstrate in the early stages of their legal careers.  Aspiring solicitors enrol on ‘Bridge to the SQE which includes modules such as Navigating the SQE, Virtual Vacation Scheme and an Introduction to Legal Technology; and future barristers undertake ‘Bridge to the Bar, which includes Preparing for the BTC, a Virtual Mini Pupillage and an Advocacy Masterclass.

To date, over 400 students have enrolled onto the programme across 9 universities who have partnered with BPP, these include; Birkbeck, Essex, LSE, Leicester, Lancaster, Nottingham, Queen Mary University of London, Royal Holloway and Salford.

The 9 scholarship awardees are:

  1. Birkbeck – Latanya Gordon

  2. Essex – Elle Robson-Groom

  3. Lancaster – Keenan Taku

  4. Leicester – Kim Chiuh

  5. LSE – Grace Francis

  6. Nottingham - Alexandra Bones

  7. Queen Mary University London – Esmeraldo Chiodini Neto

  8. Royal Holloway – Sahil Raj Grover

Commenting on the announcement, BPP’s Outreach Manager Kate Lennie said:

We are delighted to award the first set of Bridge Scholarships and we look forward to seeing these students develop in skills, knowledge, and confidence as they embark on the vocational stage of their legal studies with BPP. It has been incredibly rewarding to see all the students from our partner universities progress through the Bridge Programme, and we look forward to welcoming more students onto the programme from September.

Winner, Elle Robson-Groom from Essex University said:

“I aspire to be a Family Law Solicitor that helps families like mine, who may struggle to understand the legal issues that they are facing. I think I was chosen for this scholarship as I have been raised by my single Mum and Nan and I have been able to combat tough family circumstances and obtain my law degree. Throughout my time at university, my family has faced a lot of hardship, from caring for and losing my Nan to dementia and financial strains, I would like to believe that my story is unique and that’s what makes receiving this award so special. Being awarded this scholarship means that I can show my family that anything is possible. I was incredibly stressed about how I would find the additional money needed for my LLM LPC Course, so this scholarship is so helpful.”

Winner, Latanya Gordon from Birkbeck University, said:

“As a final-year law student interested in a career at the bar, I was excited about the Bridge Programme as I saw it as an opportunity to make an informed decision about my career path. I knew it was something I wanted to participate in as it would also help improve my confidence. The programme gave me a taste of what the Bar Course entails, and I am really looking forward to starting later this year. This is a truly remarkable initiative by BPP, and I am proud to have taken part. The programme and the scholarship have opened so many opportunities for aspiring barristers, and I am so proud to be awarded one of the scholarships. The Bridge scholarship will significantly help me and my future goals”

The Bridge Programme continues to expand as more universities are expected to partner with BPP from September 2022.
