What is the SQE?
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is the standardised assessment for aspiring solicitors in England and Wales and is made up of two stages – SQE1 and SQE2. Introduced by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), it provides a single assessment standard for all candidates regardless of background or qualification pathway.
While you no longer require a law degree or law conversion course in order to sit the centralised assessments – these are extremely challenging exams, and we recommend a comprehensive course to maximise your chances of passing.
I chose BPP after doing my research. I knew it was important to me to have a provider with a good reputation and that I knew would give me the best chance of passing SQE, and BPP’s pass rates have always been really strong.

Find your SQE route
The route into the SQE varies depending on your qualifications, previous legal study and career stage. Choose the option that best matches your circumstances and explore the next step.
Where are you starting from?

I have a law degree or completed a GDL/PDGL
Choose preparation for your next assessment stage and check the course’s entry requirements.
I have a degree in another subject
Choose how to build your legal foundations. Conversion is optional under the SQE route, although some courses and employers may require it.
I don't have a degree in any subject
You can sit the assessments without a degree. Before admission as a solicitor, you’ll need a degree or equivalent. An apprenticeship may be an option.
I am already a qualified lawyer
Qualifying work experience (QWE) is not required. Check what evidence you'll need to provide and whether any SQE exemptions apply.
I have studied some law, such as the LPC
You may fall within transitional arrangements. Check the relevant dates and SRA rules before choosing your next step. Not sure which route is best for you?

Why BPP prepares you better for the SQE

SQE exam dates
SQE1 is typically offered twice a year and SQE2 four times a year. Check the booking windows, assessment dates and results dates for the sitting you plan to take.
Course start dates and assessment dates are different. Check both carefully, including the time needed for independent study before any workshops.

Build the judgement AI can't replace
The SQE assesses legal knowledge and practical skills under specified assessment conditions. As legal practice evolves, you'll also need the judgement and critical thinking to assess information, verify its accuracy and make informed professional decisions when using technology.
AI can support the work. Responsibility stays with the lawyer.
