More about the SQE

A guide to Qualifying Work Experience (QWE)

If you’re exploring a career as a solicitor, chances are you’ll have seen that Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) is a requirement. But what exactly is QWE, what does it entail, and how do you achieve it? In this guide, we’ll answer all of those questions and more, ensuring that you’re in the best possible position to embark on your QWE journey.

Become a solicitor

The way of becoming a solicitor in England and Wales is changing. The SQE is the new qualification for aspiring solicitors. The route you take depends on where you are in your current legal studies.

A guide to the SQE

The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is the standardised assessment for aspiring solicitors in England and Wales. Introduced by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the SQE replaces the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and aims to create a more accessible and consistent route into the legal profession. To qualify as a solicitor, candidates must pass SQE1 (assessing the application of legal skills, principles and knowledge through multiple-choice questions); pass SQE2 (testing practical legal skills); complete two years of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) and meet the SRA's character and suitability requirements.

The SQE, or the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, is a two-part assessment that prospective lawyers must complete if they want to be solicitors; known as SQE1 and SQE2. Read this guide to learn when the SQE exam dates are, what to expect, and additional preparation tips.

SQE Funding: Loans & Other Options

The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is now the standard route to qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales. While it provides a more flexible and accessible pathway, the costs can still be significant.   This guide explores the various funding avenues available, from self-funding to employer sponsorships, scholarships, government loans, and private financing options.
