Academic English

The Academic English courses are designed to help you reach the English language entry requirements for your chosen BPP University International Foundation Certificate, undergraduate or postgraduate programme. Success on these courses means you can progress directly onto the applicable BPP University programme without the need to take any external English tests.

This programme is offered for one, two or three terms depending on ability at start of programme and the exit level required.

English for life, study and work

The BPP University Academic English courses are the perfect preparation for non-native English speaking students who wish to study a degree or other qualification with BPP University or who are serious about improving their level of English.

Open to all students whose first language is not English, the courses provide you with comprehensive and supported general and academic learning in all relevant areas of English language - giving you the opportunity to practice your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills with your tutor and your fellow students.

You will have the opportunity to increase your knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary and develop your academic and professional reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, in order to meet your required level of English.

Provided you reach the relevant level of English, you can progress onto your chosen degree programme without needing to take any external English language test.

Summer Courses

This course runs in the summer months and once completed successfully allow you to progress to your degree, or further English Language study, in the September term.

Multiple entry levels

There are three terms designed to improve your English capability and confidence depending on the level of English you enter with and the level they wish to achieve.

Academic English (one term)

IELTS 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5 (or equivalent)

To increase your academic English level by a minimum 0.5 IELTS

Academic English (two terms)

IELTS 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 (or equivalent)

To increase your academic English level by a minimum 1.0 IELTS

Academic English (three terms)

IELTS 5.0, 5.5 (or equivalent)

To increase your academic English level by a minimum 1.5 IELTS

Teaching

At BPP University, all our teaching is practically-focused and geared to maximising your potential. So we give you plenty of face-to-face time with your tutor (20 hours a week) primarily through small group workshops. You will also have extensive support and feedback to make sure you fully understand each module.

Classes take place daily. Outside the classroom you will be expected to do additional self-study and research.

To help you get the best learning experience, we provide access to BPP University's Virtual Learning Environment, our student intranet. This features a variety of resources and revision aids, including interactive modules, podcasts, videos and multiple-choice tests.

Extra help for those who need it

If you ever have questions after classes, or if you are finding a subject difficult, support is available from your subject tutors, your allocated personal tutor and student support.

For overseas students or for those whose first language may not be English, additional assistance is provided through international student advisers who will help you to adapt to life, learning and the requirements of studying in the UK, including expert help with social and pastoral matters.

How you will be assessed

In order to progress from one level to another - and ultimately to a BPP University degree, you will need to successfully complete an assessment of your English language skills. These tests will cover various forms of communication including:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening, and
  • Speaking

*Students progressing onto any of the Business School undergraduate programmes with an overall IELTS of 6.0 or equivalent shall be required to undertake a compulsory additional, in-sessional English/Academic English course during the first term of their studies and shall be subject to any UK regulatory requirement. **Please note all expected uplifts in language levels assume students engage in their studies and attend all classes.

Modules

Each English Language, Study and Communication Skills course lasts just one term and gives you 20 hours a week of dedicated tuition time. It offers the chance to improve your general anmd academic knowledge and use of the English language.

Once you have demonstrated that you meet the relevant standards, you’ll be able to progress to the next level or onto your chosen BPP University degree or other programme, as appropriate, without the need for any further external English language testing.

Students will improve their general and academic English skills in writing, reading, speaking, listening and grammar, and, in the final level of the course, will learn essential academic study skills including computer skills and presentation skills relevant to higher education or employment in the UK.

You will also have a Personal Tutor who works with you throughout your studies to support and guide you in achieving your study goals, improving your English language and study skills and ultimately progressing effectively onto the next stage of your education.


Entry requirements

Students must be 18 years or over at the start of the course. Students may apply for more than one term depending on the level of English they enter with and the level they wish to achieve The entry requirements will vary depending on the level of English required for your next programme.

Paying for your course

  • One Term £2,750
  • Two Terms £5,500
  • Three Terms £8,250

This course is primarily for non-UK students, though the fee above applies to registered students of any nationality.

A deposit of £250 will need to be paid within 48 hours of accepting your offer, in order to secure your place.

In addition to your programme fees, there may be additional charges associated with your studies, which include:

Resit fees for exams £75
Resit fees to repeat a 15 credit module £400
Resit fees to repeat a 20 credit module £530
Resit fees to repeat a 30 credit module £800
