How to apply

To apply for Academic English you must first be registered on a BPP University programme.

English for life, study and work

The Intensive Academic Writing course is perfect if you need to increase your academic English level by a minimum 0.5 IELTs in writing, in order to progress onto your chosen degree programme without needing to take any external English language test.


At BPP University, all our teaching is practise-focused and geared to maximising your potential. So we give you plenty of face-to-face time with your tutor (16 hours a week) primarily through small group workshops. You will also have extensive support and feedback to make sure you fully understand each module.

Classes take place daily. Outside the classroom you will be expected to do additional self-study and research.

To help you get the best learning experience, we provide access to BPP University’s Virtual Learning Environment, our student intranet. This features a variety of resources and revision aids, including interactive modules, podcasts, videos and multiple-choice tests.

Extra help for those who need it

If you ever have questions after classes, or if you are finding a subject difficult, support is available from your subject tutors, your allocated personal tutor and student support.

For overseas students or for those whose first language may not be English, additional assistance is provided through international student advisers who will help you to adapt to life, learning and the requirements of studying in the UK, including expert help with social and pastoral matters.

Summer Courses

This course runs in the summer months and once completed successfully allow you to progress to your degree, or further English Language study, in the September term.


This module will:

  • Assist you with skills for undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate academic study using effective English
  • Provide you with an opportunity to develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in an academic setting
  • Help you to understand conventions of academic discussions – spoken and written – and develop an effective academic writing style

Entry Requirements

For students progressing to a BSc (Hons) Business Management with compulsory in-sessional support:
IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in writing (or equivalent)

For students progressing to an LLB/MSc/ LLM/Dentistry/Nursing/Psychology:
IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in writing (or equivalent)

Paying for your course

  • One Term £1,000

This course is primarily for non-UK students, though the fee above applies to registered students of any nationality.

A deposit of £250 will need to be paid within 48 hours of accepting your offer, in order to secure your place.

In addition to your programme fees, there may be additional charges associated with your studies, which include:
