The Perfect preparation for a UK degree

Our Pre-Sessional English courses are designed for international students who want or need to improve their English before beginning their BPP University degree or foundation programme. Open to all non-UK students, the courses provide you with intense preparation for your chosen degree, by teaching you the necessary and relevant English and study skills that you will need to complete your qualifications.

There are four different levels of Pre-Sessional English which can be taken depending upon the requirements of your chosen BPP University degree programme and include:

Summer Courses

All of the Pre-Sessional English courses run in the summer months and once completed successfully allow you to progress to your degree, or further English Language study, in the September term.

Teaching method

This programme provides between 20 to 30 hours of face-to-face classes per week to provide a positive and supportive learning experience. We want you to have as much contact time with your tutor as possible. This is why we offer small group workshops throughout the programme. You'll take part in fully interactive sessions, often involving group work, to maximise understanding, testing and peer support.

Regular progress reviews include the chance to discuss with your personal or programme tutor. These meetings enable you to monitor your personal and academic progress and to receive support if you have difficulties.

As well as attending classes each day you are expected to study on your own. This gives you the chance to reflect on what you have learnt, and to apply your newly acquired skills. To help you achieve this, you'll have access to BPP University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), where you'll find all the study materials available 24/7.

Support

What's more, you will receive additional personal support from your Personal Tutor and through our International Student Advisers, who will help you to adapt to life, learning and the requirements of studying for a UK degree.

We realise that moving from another country to the UK will be both exciting and daunting. That's why we aim to make this transition easier for you, by encouraging social and cultural integration in the UK through a range of activities.

If you ever have questions after classes, or if you're finding a subject difficult, support is available from your subject tutors, your allocated personal tutor and student support.

Additional assistance is provided through international student advisers - including expert help in adapting your learning style to UK study.

How you will be assessed

In order to progress from one level to another - and ultimately on to your BPP University degree, you will need to successfully complete an assessment of your English language skills. These tests will cover various forms of communication depending on the course including:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening, and
  • Speaking

Modules

Pre-Sessional English Language, Study and Communication Skills lasts just one term and gives you 20 hours a week of dedicated face to face tuition time together with comprehensive on-line materials to support your learning. It offers the chance to improve your knowledge and use of the English language, prior to beginning your BPP University degree or other programme.

This course will also help you improve your language skills and vocabulary, specifically with regard to your chosen field of study. Once completed you will be able to progress to the next level or onto your chosen BPP University degree or other programme, without the need for any further external English language testing.

Students will improve their English skills in writing, reading, speaking, listening and grammar, and will learn essential academic study skills including computer skills and individual presentation skills relevant to higher education in the UK.

You will have a Personal Tutor who works with you throughout your studies to support and guide you in achieving your study goals, improving your academic and general English language and study skills and ultimately progressing effectively onto the next stage of your education.
