Contemporary Professional Nursing Practice – Level 6

Our Contemporary Professional Nursing Practice is a Level 6 module, developed in partnership with clinicians and leaders from service and also takes account of local and national patient surveys.

The module focuses on the needs of patients and service users with a diverse range of health and dependency needs, including physical and emotional care requirements, particularly addressing the needs of the ageing population. The emphasis is on providing a first class experience for all patients and service users, in a wide range of healthcare and social care settings.

Module details

The ultimate aim of the Contemporary Professional Nursing module is to develop professionally flexible, responsive nurses who are fit for purpose in range of practice settings.

The module embraces the following themes:

  • Preparing for academic and practice assessment and success
  • Evidence Based Practice (EBP)
  • Clinical governance
  • Context of Health Care
  • Professionalism
  • Preparation for Practice - Mandatory Training (Overseas Nurses only)

You will be able to complete 30 Credits to support your professional development within your current practice setting or aid those moving practice settings.

Flexible study options

You will benefit from integrated theory and practice content in a blended learning approach including up to 5.5 face-to-face days, online lectures and learning via the Virtual Learning Environment. Students will receive a minimum of two tutorial support sessions and these will be facilitated either face-to-face, online or by telephone.

How you will be assessed

During the module you will be assessed via coursework and an examination. The coursework will be a 3,000 word essay titled ‘What are the key challenges for you as a practitioner during these times of dynamic change in Health and Social Care?’ This essay will represent 60% of your final grade for the module. Your examination will be an unseen paper completed in 1.5 hours covering two topics: Part A – Drug calculations and Part B – Medicines Management. The exam represents 40% of your final grade. International students will need to successfully complete a Practice Experience Log reflecting new practice experiences. Other students will also need to complete the Log if required by the Trust.

Students must satisfy the following admission requirements:

  • A Professional Nursing Qualification completed at HE Diploma Level 5 or above
  • IELTS of 7 – Minimum of 7 to be scored for listening and reading and writing and speaking sections where English is not the first language
