Pathway to Higher Education Certificate in Legal Studies
The BPP Pathway to Higher Education Certificate in Legal Studies is all about preparing you for an undergraduate law degree at BPP.
You'll cover a range of useful preparation subjects including academic English language, communication and essential study skills – plus a core introductory legal module and another on elements of society and culture – all designed to give you an excellent grounding in the basics of law and prepare you for your next step.

Your certificate
The Pathway Certificate in Legal Studies gives you the knowledge and skills you need to be able to start any degree at BPP. This includes improving grammar, study and communication skills. As it's aimed primarily at future law students, you'll also learn the basics of English Law and aspects of Society and Culture.
The course is studied full-time over one academic term of approximately three months. There are three start dates each year in September, January and July.
Teaching
At BPP, all our teaching is practically-focused and geared to maximise your potential. So you'll receive a lot of face-to-face time with your tutor – 16 hours a week – either through small group seminars or practical workshops. You'll also have extensive online support and constant feedback to make sure you fully understand each module.
Classes take place daily. Outside the classroom you'll be expected to do additional self-study, analysing and applying new skills. For this you'll have access to our user-friendly 'Blackboard' study portal, where you can access all your learning material whenever you need it.
Extra help for those who need it
If you ever have questions after seminars, or if you're finding a subject difficult, support is always available from your allocated personal tutor or Student support
For overseas students, additional assistance is provided through international student advisers – including expert help in adapting your learning style to UK undergraduate study.
Assessment
Each module is assessed by a variety of methods, including coursework, seen and unseen exams, and group presentations.
Modules
The BPP Pathway to Higher Education Certificate in Legal Studies is made up of three modules worth a total of 60 credits.
All modules are compulsory.
English Language, Study and Communication Skills (20 credits)
The module will:
- Provide you with essential skills for undertaking undergraduate study of business management or legal studies in English within the context of British universities
- Increase your knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary relevant to your chosen fields of study, as well as developing your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the academic setting
- Familiarise you with basic conventions of academic writing and discussions, enhancing your analytical and debating skills
- Provide you with general academic presentation skills, along with those particularly relevant to your field of study
- Develop study skills in the areas of computer, presentation and employability
Introduction to English Law (20 credits)
This module will:
- Introduce you to the study of law
- Familiarise you with the sources of law and the English legal system
- Expose you to a range of academic and practitioner materials used in the study of law
- Explore the key themes underpinning the foundations of legal knowledge
- Introduce you to some basic law to enable practical problem solving
Society & Culture (20 credits)
This module will:
- Discuss the concepts and influences of human nature
- Explore the drivers and influences on both societies and cultures
- Evaluate why society is structured as it is
- Explore how and why societies change
- Enable you to develop your sociological imagination and see the world beyond the limitations of your own experiences

Entry requirements
The BPP Pathway Certificate in Legal Studies is open to UK or EEA students, aged over 18 at the start of the programme. You'll need to have completed a minimum of 12 years of schooling (or equivalent) with evidence of good grades showing you'll be able to complete the programme.
If English is not your first language, you'll also need to hold an IELTS level 5.5 score (with 5.5 in writing). This shows that your English is good enough for you to enrol on one of our courses.

Once you've successfully completed the programme you can automatically apply for an undergraduate degree. Applications are made direct to BPP by completing a BPP application form.

Founded in 2011 after a yea of consultation with and design by students, our new Students' Association is home to 5,500 students across all ten BPP sites.
Every student of the University College automatically becomes a member of the Students' Association on joining the institution.
The Association aims to put you, the student, at the heart of everything BPP does, giving you:

Paying for your course
The fees for the Pathway to Higher Education Certificate in Legal Studies course are £750 for UK/EU students from September 2012. This payment is credited against your first year's fees once you progress to our LLB course.
