Your certificate

The Pathway to HE Certificate in Health is all about giving you the confidence, knowledge and skills to go on to study an undergraduate degree course within BPP School of Health.

You don't need any previous qualifications to join the course. All we ask is that you've completed 12 years of schooling or can demonstrate relevant work or life experience.

Developing a solid foundation

The course is run over two terms and features four in-depth modules taught by experienced tutors. During the first term, you'll take an English Language, Study and Communications Skills module, together with Human Biology, both of which form the foundation of the course.

In the second term, you'll continue to study Human Biology. You'll also go on to study General Science relevant to your later healthcare learning, and a Clinical and Professional Practice module.

Once you've graduated, you'll be able to apply for any one of the courses within BPP School of Health.

Awards system

Each of the modules on the course has a credit award system. You must gain a minimum of 120 credits to graduate successfully.

Modules

The BPP Pathway to Higher Education Certificate in Health is made up of four modules totalling 120 credits. The modules are split over two terms. In each week, you’ll be expected to attend 16 hours of classes, and carry out additional homework.


English Language, Study and Communication Skills (20 credits)

The module will:

  • Provide you with essential skills for undertaking undergraduate study of business management or legal studies in English within the context of British universities
  • Increase your knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary relevant to your chosen fields of study, as well as developing your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the academic setting
  • Familiarise you with basic conventions of academic writing and discussions, enhancing your analytical and debating skills
  • Provide you with general academic presentation skills, along with those particularly relevant to your field of study
  • Develop study skills in the areas of computer, presentation and employability


Human Biology (40 credits)

This module will:

  • Provide you with a sound foundation in anatomy and physiology
  • Enable you to explore concepts within the context of health and the environment
  • Explore the cyclical impact of human activity and behaviour on ecosystems
  • Explore factors linking disease with life-style behaviour
  • Enable you to apply and integrate knowledge gained within this module


Clinical and Professional Practice (40 credits)

This module will:

  • Introduce you to the key elements and issues that lay at the heart of professionalism
  • Provide you with an insight into aspects of ethical considerations and dilemmas within practice and decision making
  • Enable you to explore, debate and gain new perspectives and own opinions within health provision
  • Provide essential theory and skills based education in clinical intervention and palpation
  • Provide knowledge and understanding for safe and effective working within limitations of practice
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of a range of health professions


General Science (20 credits)

This module will:

  • Provide you with a sound foundation in the basic concepts of chemical and physical science
  • Enable you to examine basic concepts and theories within context
  • Broaden understanding and appreciation of the subject within the wider science arena
  • Develop abilities to integrate knowledge and understanding of module material by appropriate selection, organisation and communication of information

Entry requirements

From 2012 our Pathway to HE Certificate in Health is open to both UK and International students. You'll need 12 years of schooling to join the course, or be able to demonstrate relevant professional qualifications, work or life experience – as well as strong evidence to show you can complete the course successfully.

Once you've successfully completed the programme you can automatically apply for an undergraduate degree.

Your experience

At BPP University College, your studies are just part of your student experience.

While we're unlike many traditional universities – being highly career-focused and concentrating on practical application as well as academic theories – we want your time at BPP to be a great all-round experience.

As a student of BPP Health School, not only will you have access to BPP activities and societies but you will also benefit from student-status at McTimoney College of Chiropractic and Warwickshire College.

McTimoney student union

The McTimoney student union is here to support you throughout your course. Its main objective is to represent students to the College and to act as a point of contact between the College and the student body.

Each year group will be represented by an elected member. Elections take place in January and those elected serve for a period of one full calendar year. The Union meets at least four times annually and there is an AGM in March of each year.

Union members will also represent McTimoney at the annual Conference of the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS).

Study locations

Once the course is validated, it will initially be run from January 2012 at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic. From September 2012, we also hope to be offering the course in Abingdon, Oxford and central London.

Paying for your course

The fees for courses starting in January 2012 and September 2012 will be set at £1,500 for the full programme.
