Integrated Masters in Chiropractic (MChiro)

The Integrated Masters in Chiropractic (MChiro) is specifically designed to give you the necessary skills, knowledge and hands-on experience you need to become a safe and competent chiropractor.

The MChiro also lets you choose between two flexible pathways. The four-year pathway is perfect for those coming straight from 'A' Levels or equivalent, and includes three years of intensive academic and practical studies, concluding with full-time clinic-work in year four.

The five-year pathway is great for those who wish to continue working while studying, are considering a career change, or are coming back into formal education. It features academic and practical studies spread over four years, followed by a full-time clinical year.

Both course options are delivered by The McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Our courses are recognised by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) as a pathway for acceptance onto the Register of Chiropractors.

Our Integrated Masters in Chiropractic (MChiro) brings together academic, practical and clinical components to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to become a practising chiropractor.

There are two pathways available to you: the four-year option follows an intensive academic route, perfect for students coming straight from college or 'A' Levels. The five-year option has an element of flexibility and is best suited to those who plan to work while studying or are considering a career change.

How the MChiro is taught

The MChiro is a mix of intensive academic studies and practical training, with a high staff-student ratio. Practising chiropractors teach all the practical elements, and all scientific and medical knowledge is taught by the relevant highly-qualified specialists.

Clinical training is provided at clinics based at Abingdon, close to Oxford. The training starts in year one and is fully developed in the final year, where you'll manage your own patient list under supervision.

MChiro course materials

To help you get the best learning experience, we use state-of-the-art facilities and technology. Virtual Learning Environment – our student intranet – features a variety of resources and revision aids.

You will also be provided with handouts during lectures and recommended reading lists.

MChiro assessment

You'll be assessed in a variety of ways – including written exams, projects, oral presentations and practical assessments – depending on the module and stage of development. You will also be encouraged to reflect and feedback on your own experiences, learning and development.

If required, we can assign a mentor to help guide you through the course, and most module assessments can be retaken in extenuating circumstances.

After graduation

Once you've completed the course, you'll be awarded the MChiro by the University of Wales.

Our MChiro has been formally recognised by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), which means you can then go on to apply for registration as a chiropractor. Please note, as well as the necessary qualifications, you will also be expected to show you are in good health – both mental and physical – and demonstrate good character to the Registrar. We recommend that you let us know of any health issues or criminal convictions at your interview, so that we can pass on any appropriate advice.

As a registered chiropractor, you will be required to undergo Continuing Professional Development (CPD) every year.

Modules

Taught by leading practitioners and scientific specialists, you will gain a thorough understanding of the systems and working of the human body – as well as the skills to cope with the professional and personal development initiated by the course.

The first year is set above 'A' Level standard, but the course progresses quickly from here. Depending on which pathway you choose, the modules will be split into certain years.

In preparation for your final year in the clinic, you will undertake a range of modules including clinical medicine, diagnosis and research methods, combined with extensive practical and clinical hours.



Entry requirements

The entry requirements will depend on which programme you choose.

Four-year programme 

Our four-year course begins in September each year. You must be at least 18 years old, and have passes in five GCSE subjects, including English and Maths. You'll also be expected to have three 'A' Levels, grade C or above, two of which must be in science subjects, or a relevant higher qualification.

We also:

  • consider candidates with suitable alternative science-based or Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning (APEL) qualifications.
  • ask that you have experienced a chiropractic treatment.
  • reserve the right to request candidates to sit an entrance examination.

Five-year programme 

Our five-year course begins in January each year. It is aimed at students with a wide range of backgrounds and academic experiences. We value a commitment to the profession, although we do expect every student to submit work at degree level.

If you don't meet the academic requirements or have a formal education background, we still welcome your application. We will give you any advice to help you gain the qualification and can also assess whether a foundation or access course would be appropriate.

To apply for a place on the five-year Integrated Masters in Chiropractic course, you will need to complete the McTimoney College application form. Applications may be submitted at any time – interviews are normally held between June and December.

Key dates

The MChiro courses start in September (four year programme) and January (five year programme). There is no formal deadline for applications, however we encourage you to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Study locations

The Integrated Masters in Chiropractic is taught at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Abingdon. Spring and summer schools in your first year will take place in Abingdon and at Oxford University. All clinic work is undertaken at the college in Abingdon.

You will be expected to have the facility and ability to study at home, and have access to a computer and the internet.

Paying for your course

We offer a range of different payment options for your Integrated Masters in Chiropractic – so you can choose to pay the full amount up-front or in instalments, though a payment plan. The following fees are valid for start dates in January 2012.

Payment options

To give you more flexibility, you can break up your payments, subject to satisfactory references. Unless you pay the full amount up-front, we ask you to make an initial payment of the first three month’s fees, together with both the registration fees, the student levy and the CRB check fees on the day of induction. After that, you can pay each month in advance by standing order.
