What is the new Strategic Business Leader?

This is ACCA’s case study examination at the Strategic Professional level and is examined as a closed book exam of four hours. There is no pre-seen element, all question content will be provided on the day in the exam.

What is the aim of the new exam?

Strategic Business Leader will assess the technical capabilities that potential leaders need to practically demonstrate in senior positions within organisations in the areas of strategic evaluation and change.

What will be the time allowed?

4 hours

What is different to P1, P2 and P3?

Strategic Business Leader is an exam based on one main business scenario which involves candidates completing several tasks within which additional materials may be introduced. All questions are compulsory and each examination will contain a total of 80 technical marks and 20 ACCA Professional Skills marks.

What are the new ACCA Professional Skills marks?

There are five ACCA Professional Skills; Communication, Commercial acumen, Analysis, Scepticism and Evaluation. All five ACCA Professional Skills will be assessed at every sitting for a maximum of 20 marks, however the weighting of marks per ACCA Professional Skill may vary each sitting

Students will be required to demonstrate the right blend of technical, ethical and professional skills across the following:

  • apply excellent leadership and ethical skills
  • evaluate the effectiveness of the governance and agency systems
  • evaluate the strategic position of the organisation
  • analyse the risk profile of the organisation
  • select and apply appropriate information technologies
  • evaluate management reporting and internal control/audit systems
  • apply high level financial techniques
  • enable success through innovative thinking, applying best in class strategies and disruptive technologies

What is the new Strategic Business Reporting?

The new exam expands the assessment of Corporate Reporting to include the assessment of financial analysis and scenario based ethical dilemmas.

What is the aim of the new exam?

Strategic Business Reporting will assess the ability of student to discuss, apply and evaluate the principles that underpin the preparation and interpretation of corporate reports including the ethical assessment of management’s approach to providing financial information to its stakeholders.

What will be the time allowed?

3 hours 15 minutes

What will the pass-mark be?

50%

What is different to P1, P2 and P3?

Like P2, Strategic Business Reporting will contain two sections (A and B) and all questions are compulsory. The exam will contain four professional marks. Section A will now contain two questions, each between 20-30 marks and the exam is likely to assess extract or aspects of group accounts rather than the production of full group primary statements. The assessment of an ethical response to realistic dilemma’s and financial analysis have been expanded.

What are the new ACCA Professional Skills marks?

4 marks will be awarded for Professional Skills in the same way as the P2, the Skills Level exams and Professional Level Option Exams.

What will student be expected to do?

Students will be required to demonstrate the right blend of technical, ethical and professional skills across the following:

  • apply principles to ethical dilemmas and discuss the consequences of unethical behaviour,
  • evaluate the appropriateness of the financial reporting framework and critically discuss changes in accounting regulation,
  • apply professional judgement in the reporting of the financial performance of a range of entities,
  • prepare and interpret the financial statements of groups of entities
  • explain the impact of changes in accounting regulation on financial reporting
