Prepare to practise in New York
In an increasingly globalised legal marketplace – and with a surge of US practices opening in Britain – it makes sense for UK law firms and lawyers to be dual qualified.
To qualify as an attorney-at-law in the State of New York, you need to pass the New York State Bar Exam. This is exclusively administered by the NY State Board of Law Examiners and provided twice a year, only in New York State. BPP can fully prepare you for every subject covered in these exams, without wasting time studying irrelevant areas of US law.
Run by New York Bar specialists, Pieper, our comprehensive course offers a focused programme taught with DVDs and featuring experts in New York law. It's available part or full-time in numerous UK locations.
What's more, we make sure you peak at the right time with courses finishing just before the two annual exam dates.
Teaching
The teaching assumes you have no prior exposure to US law. You'll learn the fundamental concepts along with more complex legal rules, giving you a complete understanding of New York law even if you've never studied a particular subject.
Course materials
Our DVDs feature more hours of teaching than many other New York Bar courses – approximately 175 hours, while others have around 125 hours. What's more, Pieper's iPass system gives you the flexibility to re-review lectures online whenever and wherever you want.
BPP, in partnership with Pieper, will make sure you have everything you need to prepare for both the content and question style of the exam. This includes a comprehensive study pack with textbooks, answering techniques, sample assignments and past exams.

Flexible learning
The New York Bar course is highly flexible, so whether you're a recent graduate or a partner of a law firm, you can study at times that suit you. Teaching is classroom-based and delivered through Pieper's successful programme of DVD lectures. There is also extensive online support available to help supplement the classroom element.

Entry requirements
Due to changes in the system, candidates are now encouraged to request evaluation of their eligibility up to a year in advance of the application filing period. So, in addition to the exam application, you will also need to complete a foreign evaluation form (contact +44 (0) 845 644 6092 for details).
This will need to be requested approximately 12 months in advance of submission. Evaluation will take eight to ten weeks from the receipt of all relevant documentation.
Eligibility is at the sole discretion of the New York Board of Law Examiners and is determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on academic record and experience. However, according to the guidance we have been given, you should be eligible if you have completed a three-year full time or four-year part time law degree – studying jurisprudence based on English Common Law. Delegates who have completed a GDL and LPC or BPTC only are generally required to take a one-year Masters degree in the US.
Please remember that this is just a guide and you will need to confirm your eligibility with the New York State Board of Examiners.
