Gain a competitive edge

The MA (LPC with Business) (‘the MA’) is a new programme that has been developed by BPP to offer students the opportunity to study the Legal Practice Course (‘the LPC’) alongside two business focussed modules, namely (i) Strategy and (ii) Finance (‘the Business Modules’) and a business intelligence project (‘BIP’).

The MA comprises two components which must be completed within a maximum five year period:

  • (i) the LPC delivered by BPP University Law School which develops the student’s knowledge and skills for practice as a lawyer (view the LPC part of this website for more details); and
  • (ii) the Business Modules delivered online via pre-recorded lectures and structured study put together by BPP University Business School.

Students are awarded the MA (LPC with Business) on successful completion of the LPC, the Business Modules and the BIP.

The Business Modules are studied via online lectures, which build on the business and finance content of the LPC to create a combined platform for developing technically competent legal practitioners who can interpret their roles as lawyers ‘through the client’s eyes’ and frame their advice with a clear appreciation of the commercial context.

Once you have settled into your LPC studies, you will be contacted about whether or not you wish to undertake the Business Modules and BIP to work towards obtaining the MA qualification.

There is no additional cost if you wish to undertake the Business Modules and BIP on top of your LPC (i.e. if you enrol onto the MA (LPC with Business)).

Can I convert my LPC to the MA (LPC with Business)?

If you completed your LPC (within the last five years), you can convert your LPC to the MA (LPC with Business) from September 2014. You must complete your online studies of the Business Modules and the BIP within five years of you commencing the LPC.

To apply please apply direct

The MA Business Modules and Business Intelligence Project are studied and submitted online. There is not set study timetable for these business elements and students can undertake the online learning at their leisure. Guidance on the most appropriate times to study the modules will be provided once students have settled into their LPC studies. For information about the LPC modules, see the LPC part of this website.

Business modules

Business Finance – 15 credits

Lawyers require insight into the nature of finance and financial markets in order to understand the issues that shape and affect the business environment in which their clients operate. This module focuses on an integrated appreciation of key financial disciplines in order to carry out effective business analysis. The emphasis is on concepts and reasoning, rather than deep technical detail, allowing you to become a more informed and critical business analyst and user of a range of financial information. You will:

  • Improve your financial literacy to confidently analyse and discuss a range of financial information with professionals and clients
  • Identify the appropriate financial tools and techniques to help you evaluate business situations facing clients
  • Combine quantitative and qualitative information to analyse financial performance and profitability, and make recommendations accordingly
  • Gain a robust understanding of the significance of corporate finance to the contemporary organisation

Business Strategy – 15 credits

Amid an increasingly dynamic and turbulent business environment, the drive to overcome the threat of fierce competition is a constant challenge and strain on businesses. The need to identify, understand and apply strategic choices in a breakthrough way is therefore of huge importance. This module introduces you to a broad range of key strategic tools and frameworks and provides you with the opportunity to explore their application to a wide range of competitive scenarios. You will:

  • Use strategic tools and frameworks to identify how organisations create and sustain a competitive advantage
  • Identify how organisations harness their resources and capabilities to meet their strategic objectives
  • Consider different strategic approaches and the subsequent implications for the organisation and its competitive position
  • Systematically examine the determinants of industry and firm profitability and how these factors can be shaped and influenced over time

Business Intelligence Project – 30 credits

Once students have completed the two Business Modules, students embark on the final part of the MA qualification: the BIP. The BIP is a project that enables the student to engage in substantial research into and analysis of a chosen business sector or industry. Students are required to collect data, look at evidence of the relevant factors, conduct qualitative and, if relevant, quantitative research and produce a report of their findings, conclusions and recommendations.
