Our innovative MA (Law with Business) programme is specifically designed to build on your LPC or BPTC qualification – helping you to succeed in a fast-changing, business-focused legal environment.

Cutting-edge analytical approach

The MA (Law with Business) is designed to give you a competitive edge in the modern legal marketplace. Building on the LPC or BPTC, the programme draws on a range of tools to give you cutting-edge analytical skills derived from economics, finance and strategy.

Unique in its scope, it will sharpen your understanding of the key business functions of your future firm – from financial and regulatory frameworks, to corporate strategy and positioning.

How the programme is taught

To ensure you get the most from the programme, seminars are taught in small groups by a mix of academics and qualified practitioners. You'll learn through practice – partaking in real projects, experiencing real business issues and discussing them in-depth with the group.

Your tutors will guide you through the programme and assist with personal study and research techniques. So you have all the support you need.

Flexible study options

Studied full time the programme can be completed in four months, or part-time, it can be spread over a maximum of five years.

Face-to-face programmes start in September 2012 at several UK study locations (subject to demand). Studying full time will require two weekly seminars of three hours, as well as extensive self-study and research.

From September 2013 you can also study via online distance learning.

Modules

The MA (Law with Business) is made up of two taught modules and a Business Intelligence Project.

Structure and assessment

Each module is practically focused and you'll be 100% assessed through a written assignment for each module that demonstrates your understanding of the material.

Strategy (15 credits)

Amid an increasingly dynamic and turbulent business environment, the drive to overcome the threat of fierce competition is a constant challenge and strain on businesses.

The need to identify, understand and apply strategic choices in a breakthrough way is therefore of huge importance. This module introduces you to a broad range of key strategic tools and frameworks and provides you with the opportunity to explore their application to a wide range of competitive scenarios. You will:

  • Use strategic tools and frameworks to identify how organisations create and sustain a competitive advantage
  • Identify how organisations harness their resources and capabilities to meet their strategic objectives
  • Consider different strategic approaches and the subsequent implications for the organisation and its competitive position
  • Systematically examine the determinants of industry and firm profitability and how these factors can be shaped and influenced over time

Assessment One graded element worth 100%: Strategy Case Study (3,000 words)

Business Finance (15 credits)

Lawyers require insight into the nature of finance and financial markets in order to understand the issues that shape and affect the business environment in which their clients operate. This module focuses on an integrated appreciation of key financial disciplines in order to carry out effective business analysis. The emphasis is on concepts and reasoning, rather than deep technical detail, allowing you to become a more informed and critical business analyst and user of a range of financial information. You will:

  • Improve your financial literacy to confidently analyse and discuss a range of financial information with professionals and clients
  • Identify the appropriate financial tools and techniques to help you evaluate business situations facing clients
  • Combine quantitative and qualitative information to analyse financial performance and profitability, and make recommendations accordingly
  • Gain a robust understanding of the significance of corporate finance to the contemporary organisation

Assessment One graded element worth 100%: Finance Case Study (3,000 words)

Business intelligence project

The project builds on the taught modules of the programme. The BPP Business School business intelligence project enables the student to engage in a substantial intelligence gathering and analysis project in one of three ways:

  • Consultancy driven in collaboration with an agreed commercial or public sector client
  • ‘Business-typical’ desk-based research as agreed with BPP supervisor

Successful projects will demonstrate synthesis of knowledge and skills and is the largest piece of assessed work undertaken on the MA (Law with Business). This module aims to:

  • Provide you with an opportunity to undertake a detailed investigation and analysis of areas or topics of interest within the subject field relevant to the contemporaneous business environment
  • Enhance your ability to apply skills and knowledge developed through the programme modules
  • Provide an opportunity for critical reflection on research topics within the subject field
  • Provide occasion for self-reflection of skills developed throughout the programme

Entry requirements

To study the MA (Law with Business), you'll need to be enrolled on or have completed and passed the BPP LPC or BPTC.

You can study the MA face-to-face from September 2012 and online from September 2013.
