LLM (Professional Legal Practice)

The BPP LLM (Professional Legal Practice) is designed for recent graduates of the BPP Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Practice Training Course (BPTC – formally known as the BVC) graduates. It allows you to convert your postgraduate diploma into a full Law Masters – preparing you for practice and opening up many career opportunities.

Following successful completion of the LPC or BVC or BPTC with BPP you have already achieved 120 credits towards this qualification – and you will only have a remaining 60 credits left to obtain.

What's more the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) has designated BPP Law School as a 'Centre of Excellence' for investment, regulation and compliance. This means depending on your subject choice, you may also be eligible for student CISI membership and will qualify for the award of the CISI Diploma in Investment Compliance* in addition to the LLM.

Convert your LPC or BPTC to an LLM

With our LLM (Professional Legal Practice), you can convert your LPC or BPTC (formerly BVC) into a full Law Masters degree from one of the UK's top law schools. Plus, with wide-ranging modules and research topics, you can choose whether to specialise in something you've already studied, or develop a brand new area of knowledge.

Whichever route you choose, the LLM (Professional Legal Practice) provides a significant boost to your career prospects and sets you apart from other LPC or BPTC (formerly BVC) graduates.

How it works

Our LPC or BPTC courses are studied at Masters level, so they make up 120 of the 180 credits required for a full Law Masters. You can complete the remaining 60 credits of your LLM (Professional Legal Practice) by taking one of the following pathways:

  • Two research projects; or
  • One research project and one taught module


You have five years from the start of your LPC and BPTC to complete the full Masters programme.

Ways to study 

The LLM (Professional Legal Practice) is designed to fit around your commitments. You can complete it in just four months after finishing your LPC or BPTC, or up to four years later.

There are three start dates each year. You can choose to take both modules at the same time or you can do the modules consecutively taking a break between them if it suits you. You can sign up for the full Masters when you register for the LPC or BPTC if you wish or you can choose to convert to a full Masters during or after your LPC or BPTC.

How the LLM is taught

All your research will need to demonstrate practical relevance – enhancing the skills you learnt in your LPC or BPTC. This developed knowledge and understanding of your chosen subject areas will make you more attractive to prospective employers. What's more, modules are taught by experts in their fields who enjoy international reputations and have current practical experience.

From the beginning you'll receive help developing your own ideas for research. While you are undertaking your research, you will receive supervision on a one-to-one basis – by face-to-face, telephone or email.

LLM guest speaker programme

We arrange a wide variety of talks and lecturers to keep you up-to-date with relevant legal insights. Speakers range from eminent professors to experienced practictioners, including judges, regulators and legislators.

Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) Diploma

If you complete the taught module in Financial Regulation and Compliance and undertake your research in a relevant area, you'll also be eligible for full student CISI membership, as well as qualifying for the CISI Diploma in Investment Compliance*

*Subject to passing a CISI administered exam.

Our LPC or BPTC courses are studied at Masters level, so they make up 120 of the 180 credits required for a full Law Masters. You can complete the remaining 60 credits of your LLM (Professional Legal Practice) by choosing one of the following pathways:

  • Two research projects; or
  • One research project and one taught module


Taught modules

The LLM Professional Legal Practice course takes a minimum of one calendar year including the LPC or BPTC. You have 15 weeks to complete each research project and you can choose different study approaches depending on your time and circumstances:

  • Complete two research projects at the same time
  • Complete your research project at the same time as a taught module
  • Complete one at a time, at your own pace

You have five years from the start of your LPC and BPTC to complete the full Masters programme.

You should have completed all LPC or BPTC (BVC) assessments before you start your research.

To apply for a place on the LLM in (Professional Legal Practice), you will need to complete a BPP application form at the top of this page. There are no formal deadlines, but the sooner you apply the better.

If you've already been accepted onto the LPC or BPTC, we will email further details to you. If you're a qualifying alumnus, you'll need to complete a BPP application form at the top of this page and send it directly to BPP.

Key dates

The LLM Professional Legal Practice course starts in March, July and October. You can attend the Preparation and Planning module on several different dates.

The full programme fee includes the LPC or BPTC fee, plus the LLM (PLP) fee:

  • £2,910 (courses starting between Sept 11 and Aug 12)
  • £3,250 (courses starting between Sept 12 and Aug 13)
