Suitable for: Introduction to the main
financial markets and the instruments that operate within them
Description: The EU's Markets in
Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) represents a significant
push towards creating a single European market in financial
services. Unlike many previous EU Directives which dealt with
specific regulatory areas, MiFID is particularly far-reaching in
its impact.
Along with other member States, the UK has had to revamp much of
its financial services regulations to meet the MiFID requirements.
The FSA has taken the opportunity to reduce the volume of its
Handbook, a change which is consistent with the Authority's move
towards more principles-based regulation ('PBR'). With the shift
towards PBR, the onus is on firms' senior management and relevant
individuals to comply with and interpret the regulator's high level
principles, such as the requirement to 'conduct its business with
due skill, care and diligence'.
This introductory text will provide a useful reference in
explaining what has changed and how it impacts on both firms and
individuals working within the financial sector.
