Studying part-time at BPP

BPP specialises in providing part-time programmes to enable people from all backgrounds to study to become lawyers at the same time as fulfilling their other commitments.

Most people on our part-time programmes are in existing full or part-time employment and are studying law with a view to making a career change, or to enhance their exsisting careers.

Many part-time students think their circumstances are unique and one of the questions we are often asked is 'will I fit in to studying law part-time?'

The answer is that there is no particular kind of person who studies on our part-time programmes . BPP has helped doctors, secretaries, army personnel, administrators, civil servants, people working in the financial services industry and commerce, taxi drivers and many others to successfully make the transition to legal careers. Indeed, it is this very diversity of practical experience which makes tutorials on part-time programmes so lively and informative for both students and tutors alike.

We recognise that everyone's circumstances are different. We provide a wide range of part-time programmes allowing you the flexibility to study in a manner most convenient to you. For example, you can study the Graduate Diploma in Law conversion course (GDL) in the evenings, at weekends, during the day or by distance learning. You can study the Legal Practice Course (LPC) either in the evenings, at the weekend or during the day and the Bar Vocational Course (BVC) on weekends.

What's more, the structure of our programmes together with the materials and support we provide are specially designed to help those with busy work, family and other commitments to successfully complete their studies.

As a part-time student, through our virtual campus, you can access a wealth of programme information, careers advice, journals and texts from your home or (work permitting!) your office computer. Combined with the extensive range of texts and materials provided within your programme fees, this minimises the need for you to spend precious time traveling to and from the library for private study, although our long opening hours, (including weekends) enable you to use the library for private study if you wish to do so.

Careers advice

We have a dedicated Careers Service experienced in dealing with the needs of part-time students, many of whom are looking to law as a second career.

Careers advice is built in to the programme and our careers advisors will draw up a Careers Action Plan tailored to meet your particular needs and aspirations.

Which programme is right for me?

Naturally, this depends on a variety of factors. Broadly, if you are able to regularly attend classes starting at 6.00 p.m. during the week, then the frequent contact of evening classes is probably best for you.

If such attendance is impractical, perhaps because of work or family commitments, you may find our weekend programmes or studying by distance learning more appropriate. The weekend programmes concentrate classes into a shorter period of time and provide more flexibility in choosing when and where to do your private study.

On the other hand, although all our part-time programmes are well structured, with clear guidance given on what you should be doing and when, studying on the weekend programmes , or by distance learning requires more independent study and self motivation than the more frequent contact provided by evening classes.

Whatever your circumstances, BPP has a part-time programmes that can help you achieve your ambitions.
