NHS Financial Management Training Scheme

The scenario

The NHS Graduate Scheme is one of the leading graduate training programmes in the UK recruiting over 150 new graduates from over 7,000 applications every September.

In 2004, the NHS Leadership Centre requested a more holistic, unified graduate training programme which would offer consistency and high levels of service quality throughout the country for all Finance graduates - the first time a national approach had been attempted in the NHS' history.

The solution

BPP worked closely with the NHS Leadership Centre to develop a graduate training programme that met their requirements - the results have been unprecedented, with graduates achieving well over 90% pass rates and securing such a level of prize-winning excellence that the Scheme recently drew the following comment from CIMA's Chief Executive, Charles Tilley:

'..[it is] a truly exceptional performance and we are aware of no other such Scheme that has ever performed as well.'

The programme development

Involved

  1. designing bespoke versions of the courses to fit in the NHS recruitment process
  2. BPP attending every induction session to ensure that the culture of success continued
  3. running in-house mocks with each sitting and providing detailed reports which identified weaker students.
  4. additional tutor sessions were held for the tougher papers and when required.

Feedback

'Since 2003 the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme and BPP plc has continued to build a strong working partnership together to deliver one of the most successful CIMA graduate programs in the United Kingdom. Our graduates who study with BPP have enjoyed unprecedented, prize-winning success in CIMA examinations, a success recently noted and applauded by both CIMA's Chief Executive and the Minister for Health. We are delighted to have BPP as one of our key strategic partners in building the NHS leaders of the future.'
