This Apprenticeship responds to a market that does not have enough new entrants.

The Payroll Sector is an ageing profession and employers are reporting skills shortages. There is a need to provide stringent training and career opportunities to attract new people to the profession.

This programme will provide the profession with new entrants who will develop the knowledge and understanding they need to become competent employees. It also offers people the opportunity to progress to professional qualifications within the payroll profession, as well as opportunities in more general financial roles or human resources.

Intermediate Apprenticeship in Payroll – Level 2

Entry Requirements
There are no mandatory entry requirements for this framework

This Apprenticeship is suitable for those who hold job titles such as:
  • Payroll Assistant
  • Payroll Clerk
  • Payroll Administrator
  • Trainee Payroll Administrator
This apprenticeship is suitable if your job role includes:
  • Inputting data from time sheets, production records and individual time cards to computerised payroll systems
  • Compiling payroll data, entering data or computing and posting wages, reconciling errors, maintaining payroll records using a computer
  • Assisting in the preparation and administration of payroll and auditing payroll processing reports for accuracy
Training Framework
  • Combined competence and knowledge qualification: Level 2 Certificate in Payroll
  • Key Skills in Application of Number Level 1*
  • Key Skills in Communication Level 2*
  • Key Skills in ICT Level 1*
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Workbook
*Learners may be exempt Key Skills if they hold a recent relevant GCSE or equivalent

Progression and Career Development
For those wishing to continue their skills and qualifications, opportunities exist to progress to higher level professional qualifications such as:
  • IAB Level 3 Certificate in Payroll
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) and the International Association of Bookkeepers (IAB)
Progression routes from level 2 to level 3 lead to supervisory positions or alternative progression routes including a move into other related fields such as Administration, Information Technology, Supervision and Management, Pensions, Customer Service.

Advanced Apprenticeship in Payroll – Level 3

  • Payroll Supervisor 
  • Assistant Payroll Manager 
  • Deputy Payroll Manager 
  • Payroll Team Leader
This apprenticeship is suitable if your job role includes:
  • Supervising the daily operation of an assigned payroll unit 
  • Ensuring the entire payroll is processed accurately and on time 
  • Supervising the payroll team and making sure that deadlines are met
Training Framework
Learners on this Apprenticeship need to complete the following Framework:
