Business and Administration

Around 20,000 Apprentices commence a Business and Administration Apprenticeship each year.

The qualifications gained are up to date and employer led to ensure that they can meet the changing skill needs of employers, including softer skills such as:

  • team working
  • interpersonal skills
  • the ability to reflect on your own learning.

Employers have identified skills shortages in administrators such as a lack of office and administration skills, customer handling skills, technical and practical skills, oral and communication skills and IT skills. All  of these are covered within the Business and Administration Frameworks.



Intermediate Apprenticeship – Level Two

Entry Requirements: 
There are no mandatory entry requirements for this framework

Pathways available:

Pathway 1: Business and Administration - This Apprenticeship is suitable for those who hold job titles such as: 

  • Administrator / Business Support Officer 
  • Office Junior Receptionist
Suitable Job tasks include:
  • Making and receiving telephone calls
  • Helping with the organisation of meetings and events
  • Dealing with travel requests
  • Handling mail and record keeping
  • Using electronic message systems and office equipment
  • Taking notes and welcoming visitors
Pathway 2: Legal Administration -  This Apprenticeship is suitable for those who hold job titles such as: 
  • Junior Legal Secretary
Suitable Job tasks include:
  • Filing and maintaining legal records
  • Proof reading
  • Transcribing notes and dictation
  • Answering letters, making and receiving telephone calls and using electronic messaging systems and office equipment.

Pathway 3: Medical Administration - This Apprenticeship is suitable for those who hold job titles such as:

  • Junior Medical Secretary
  • Medical Receptionist
Suitable Job tasks include:
  • Making and receiving telephone calls
  • Handling mail
  • Writing letters and recording medical notes
  • Labelling medical samples
  • Filing and making appointments and using electronic messaging systems and office equipment
  • Welcoming visitors and maintaining the reception area
Training Framework
  • Competence Qualification: Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Business & Administration
  • Knowledge Qualification:
  • Pathway 1: Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Business and Administration
  • Pathway 2: Level 2 Certificate for Legal Secretaries

  • Other Advanced Apprenticeships such as Customer Service or Management

With further training, Intermediate Apprentices may be able to progress their careers to roles such as:

Higher Apprenticeship – Level Four

Entry Requirements
There are no mandatory entry requirements for this framework however it would be expected that Higher Apprentices will have significant experience of working in a business environment to ensure they have the suitable foundations on which to build their knowledge and skills.

Pathway 1: Business and Professional Administration

  • Office Manager Administration
  • Team Leader
  • Personal Assistant Business
  • Development Executive

  • Supporting sustainability within an office environment, assessing, managing and monitoring risk
  • Communicating with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Managing an office facility
  • Managing projects
  • Overseeing customer service delivery and contributing to innovation
  • Monitoring and maintaining administrative services and co-ordinating events
  • Preparing contract specifications and monitoring and evaluating contracts
  • Chairing meetings
  • Developing and delivering presentations
  • Managing budgets and developing new ideas for projects and services
