Accounting Apprenticeship
This Apprenticeship aims to train accountants to Technician Level (QCF Level 4) – working for accountancy firms, or in finance or accounting in another organisations.
Who is the Accounting Apprenticeship for?
The apprenticeship in accounting is relevant for any role within an accounting context, including:
- Sales and purchase ledger clerks
- Cashiers
- Assistant accountants
- Accounts managers.

- Intermediate Apprenticeship – Level Two
- Advanced Apprenticeship – Level Three
- Higher Apprenticeship in Accounting – Level Four

Available Pathways: Pathway one – Accounting
This Apprenticeship is suitable if you have a job title such as:
- Accounts assistant / clerk
- Cashier
- Credit control clerk
- Finance assistant
- Purchase or sales ledger clerk
You will be suited if your job role involves:
- Maintaining relevant financial records, handling and control of cash transactions
- Maintaining a number of sales ledger accounts, involvement in the debt collection process and cash allocation
- Accruals and pre-payments
- Assisting in the processing of financial transactions and the provision of financial information
- Generating internal invoices, coding and checking invoices, working out VAT payments
- Paying out money and checking and reconciling supplier statements
- Setting up new clients, producing invoices and chasing debts
Training framework
- Combined competence & knowledge Qualification: AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting (AAT) or ACCA Foundations in Accounting Level 2 Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting
- Key Skills in Application of Number Level 1*
- Key Skills in Communication Level 1*

Career progression
From this level you could progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship in Accounting (Level 3). With further training you may be able to progress into roles such as:
- Trainee Accountant
- Trainee Accounting Technician

Advanced Apprenticeship – Level Three
Entry requirements
- There are no mandatory entry requirements. See our eligibility criteria.
- Entrants who have not completed the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Accounting will usually require GCSE Maths grades A to C*, Key Skill Application of Numbers or Functional Skill Mathematics at Level 1 – or equivalent – as well as good communication skills and vocational experience.
Available Pathway: Pathway one – Accounting
This Apprenticeship is suitable you if you have a job title such as:
- Trainee Accountant
- Trainee Accounting Technician
- Assistant Accountant
- Other titles as identified at Level 2 but with senior skills or experience
Suitable job roles include:
- Support role in a firm of accountants, or in the accounts or finance departments of organisations in industry, commerce or the public sector
- Bookkeeping, auditing, tax, payroll and related assignments
- Other roles as identified at Level 2 but with senior skills or experience
Training framework
- Combined competence and knowledge qualification: Level 3 Diploma in Accounting (AAT) or Level 3 Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting (ACCA Foundations in Accounting)
- Key Skills in Application of Numbers Level 2*

Higher Apprenticeship in Accounting – Level Four
Entry requirements
- There are no mandatory entry requirements. See our eligibility criteria.
- It is recommended that entrants who have not completed the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Accounting will require GCSE Maths grades A to C*, Key Skill Application of Numbers or Functional Skill Mathematics at Level 1 – or equivalent – as well as good communication skills and significant vocational experience.
Available Pathway: Pathway one – Accounting
This Apprenticeship is suitable for you if you have a job titles such as:
- Accounts Manager
- Accounting Technician
- Other titles as identified at Level 3 but with management or team leading skills or experience
Suitable job roles include:
- Strategic responsibility for an accounts payable and receivable department
- Wider credit management and people management duties
- Controlling budgets, assisting with the preparation of accounts and writing reports
- Other roles as identified at Level 3 but with management or team leading skills or experience
Training framework
- Combined competence and knowledge qualification: Level 4 Diploma in Accounting (AAT) or Level 4 Diploma in Accounting and Business (ACCA Foundations in Accounting)
